Immigration

Immigrants have helped shape the state we are proud to call home today. I’ve seen first-hand the incredible contributions that immigrants have made to our society, starting with my father, who came to the United States from Costa Rica in high school and eventually became our nation’s first Latino astronaut.  Immigrants throughout our state deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and I’ve worked hard to prevent anti-immigration sentiment from impeding practical public safety, education, and economic development policy.

As an advocate for positive immigration policies in Massachusetts, I am proud to be the lead sponsor of An Act Regarding Higher Education Opportunities for High School Graduates in the Commonwealth, a bill that provides equal access to higher education and financial assistance for Massachusetts high school students who are in the process of becoming U.S. citizens and have been accepted to a public college or university. This bill is about fairness to those who live in, work in, and contribute to our communities and our economy.

I am also an active supporter of several immigration-related bills filed by other legislators, among them:

-          An Act Relative to Safe Driving, which would bean important step toward ensuring the safety of all Massachusetts drivers and passengers by increasing the number of drivers who go through the proper licensing process and purchase insurance.

-          The Trust Act, which protects Massachusetts law enforcement agencies from federal overreach into local decisions regarding community safety and protects our communities from the diversion of state and local tax dollars to federal responsibilities.
